If AI were picking a fragrance brand, here's who it picks, and why.

AI leans on heritage niche houses like Diptyque and Maison Francis Kurkdjian for general 'best perfume' questions, but hands the top spot to cheap dupe brands like Armaf, Dossier and Zara whenever a shopper mentions price or an alternative, because those answers draw on dupe roundups rather than luxury editorial.

ChatGPT Claude

Why these brands win

What the answers and their sources have in common.

Dupe questions are where unknown brands beat the giants

When shoppers ask for alternatives or budget picks, AI recommends budget and dupe brands outright, not the originals. A challenger's easiest route in is to be framed as the alternative to a cult scent.

Armaf took first place in all 3 answers it appeared in (average position 1), including both ChatGPT and Claude for 'alternatives to Baccarat Rouge 540'; Dossier appeared in 5 answers and was Claude's first pick for 'brands like Le Labo but cheaper'

Scento.com is the single most quoted fragrance source

A specialist fragrance site, not a glossy magazine, is cited more than any other. Its 'best office' and 'long-lasting' lists feed answers that mostly name designer brands such as Chanel, YSL and MFK.

scento.com: 10 citations across 8 of 24 answers, more than double the next editorial source, whowhatwear.com (6 citations, 5 answers)

Who What Wear and Cosmopolitan carry the affordable brands

Fashion magazines' 'under £50' and dupe lists are where Zara, Dossier, Lattafa and Armaf get their credibility. Premium lists on scento.com and fragrancefocus.com almost never mention them.

whowhatwear.com answers named Zara, Dossier, Phlur, Lattafa and Armaf; cosmopolitan.com's '12 Best Zara Perfume Dupes' and '7 Best Baccarat Rouge 540 Dupes' were cited in 3 answers

Claude names more brands and spreads its picks further

Claude mentions niche and dupe brands more often than ChatGPT, so it offers smaller brands more room. The two models also rarely agree on the top pick.

MFK appeared in 4 Claude answers vs 1 ChatGPT; Lattafa, Byredo, Chanel and Phlur each 3 vs 1; the models gave the same first pick on only 4 of 12 questions

Scent-description questions reward a signature hero product

Questions like 'smells like clean laundry' or 'vanilla that isn't too sweet' were won by brands with one famous scent that answers that brief. Both models agreed on the winner each time.

Maison Margiela was first for clean laundry and Diptyque first for non-sweet vanilla on both ChatGPT and Claude; Diptyque has 4 first places overall, the most of any brand

How a brand gets recommended here

Hype's playbook, ranked by where AI gets its answers in this niche, plus the moves we'd make first.

Play 1 · Get into the roundups AI quotes

Pitch fashion and beauty editors for their 'best perfumes under £50', 'smells expensive' and 'Baccarat Rouge 540 / Le Labo dupe' roundups. Position a hero scent as the named alternative to a specific cult fragrance.

Dupe and budget questions are where challengers win first place: Armaf has 3 first places from 3 appearances and Dossier appears in 5 answers. whowhatwear.com (6 citations) and cosmopolitan.com (3 citations, including two dupe lists) are the editorial sources behind those answers.

whowhatwear.comcosmopolitan.comelle.comvogue.com

Play 2 · Be tested by review sites

Send samples and discovery sets to independent fragrance testing and listicle sites, aiming at their 'best office perfume', 'long-lasting' and 'clean laundry scent' guides.

scento.com is the most cited source (10 citations in 8 of 24 answers), and smaller testers such as theperfumeescape.com, whatscent.app and basenotescent.com each feed answers. Their lists currently name mainly designer houses, which leaves room for newcomers.

Play 3 · Answer-ready pages and listings

Publish honest 'if you like X, try our Y' comparison pages for cult scents such as Baccarat Rouge 540, Le Labo Another 13 and Replica Lazy Sunday Morning. Pair them with scent-profile pages that answer briefs like 'vanilla that isn't too sweet'.

Dupe pages are already being cited as sources: chaosfragrances.com's Baccarat Rouge and Le Labo dupe guides appear in 3 answers, and skinsort.com's product pages in 2 answers (5 citations). Brand sites such as nishane.com and zoologistperfumes.com are also cited directly for niche questions.

chaosfragrances.comskinsort.comsephora.com

Play 4 · Expert backing

Get perfumers and fragrance specialists to rank or quote your scents in their 'best niche perfumes' and 'long-lasting' guides.

prosodylondon.com's perfumer-ranked lists drew 4 citations across 2 answers. Niche-brand questions favour the brands those experts name: MFK appeared in 5 answers and was Claude's first pick twice.
