If AI were picking a skincare brand, here's who it picks, and why.

AI recommends US pharmacy brands CeraVe, La Roche-Posay and Vanicream for sensitive skin because it leans on American 'dermatologist-recommended' roundups and the American Academy of Dermatology, and draws on a separate set of small K-beauty blogs for Korean skincare questions.

Why these brands win

What the answers and their sources have in common.

Vanicream tops every answer it appears in

Vanicream has a small UK presence, yet both models put it first for sensitive-skin moisturiser, rosacea and gentle cleanser questions. When AI reads dermatologist roundups, the brand those experts name first takes the top spot, whatever its UK shelf presence.

Vanicream appears in 7 answers with 7 first places and an average position of 1.0. CeraVe appears in 13 answers but comes first in only 5.

UK shoppers get answers built on American sources

The most-cited sources are US news sites and a US dermatology body. UK titles and retailers barely feature, so being well known in Boots does not mean AI will recommend you.

nbcnews.com has 12 citations across 7 answers, aad.org 7 across 6, and today.com and aol.com 3 to 4 answers each. stylist.co.uk is cited in only 2 answers and boots.com in 1.

'According to dermatologists' is the headline that gets quoted

Most of the editorial pages AI cites present themselves as expert-backed. The brands named in those pages make up the shortlist.

Cited titles include 'The best drugstore moisturizers… according to dermatologists' (nbcnews), 'Best Rosacea Skin Care Products 2026, According to Dermatologists' (today.com) and 'If You Have Rosacea, Doctors Say…' (aol.com).

ChatGPT and Claude often disagree on the top pick

Claude names a longer list and gives mid-sized challengers room. ChatGPT sticks closer to a few names, so a brand's visibility depends heavily on which assistant a shopper uses.

The two models picked a different brand first on 7 of 12 questions. Cetaphil, Good Molecules, EltaMD, Paula's Choice, BYOMA and Naturium each appear in 3 Claude answers and no ChatGPT answers. CeraVe appears in 8 Claude answers against 5 ChatGPT answers.

K-beauty answers come from small niche blogs

Korean sunscreen and 'brands like Beauty of Joseon' answers cite small K-beauty review sites rather than big publications. A challenger can get onto these sites far more easily than into NBC.

gulfnews.com (3 answers), kptown.com, aesteticadvice.com (2 each), and kwaveinsider, thebaerry, curlynikki, k-touch.us and powersof10 (1 each) all list the same set: Beauty of Joseon, Anua, Round Lab, medicube, TOCOBO, Krave Beauty.

How a brand gets recommended here

Hype's playbook, ranked by where AI gets its answers in this niche, plus the moves we'd make first.

Play 1 · Get into the roundups AI quotes

Pitch shopping editors at NBC News Select, TODAY and Yahoo/AOL for their recurring roundups, such as 'best moisturisers for sensitive skin' and 'best rosacea products, according to dermatologists'. Also pitch Stylist's 'best affordable skincare brands' list for UK coverage.

nbcnews.com is the most-cited source, with 12 citations across 7 answers. today.com and aol.com each feed 3 to 4 answers. These pages decide which brands make the CeraVe, La Roche-Posay and Vanicream shortlist.

nbcnews.comtoday.comaol.comstylist.co.uk

Play 2 · Expert backing

Recruit UK and US dermatologists to comment on your formulas for barrier repair, rosacea and acne-prone skin. Supply those quotes to editors who build 'derm-recommended' lists, and publish ingredient guidance that follows AAD advice.

aad.org is cited in 6 of 24 answers. Most cited roundup titles say 'according to dermatologists'. Vanicream, the brand those experts favour, comes first in all 7 answers it appears in.

aad.orgnbcnews.comtoday.comcnn.com

Play 3 · Be tested by review sites

Get products listed and reviewed on Skinsort's 'best for oily skin' and 'British SPF' lists. For K-beauty lines, send samples to the small test blogs that publish 'best Korean sunscreen, no white cast' roundups.

skinsort.com has 8 citations across 4 answers. Korean sunscreen and 'brands like Beauty of Joseon' answers draw on kptown, aesteticadvice and similar small sites, and those sites already list challengers like TOCOBO and Krave Beauty.

skinsort.comkptown.comaesteticadvice.comgulfnews.com

Play 4 · Answer-ready pages and listings

Name product pages by the problem they solve, for example 'gentle cleanser for sensitive skin', and add plain comparison pages such as 'vs CeraVe' and 'alternative to The Ordinary for sensitive skin'. Make sure Boots listings carry full ingredient and skin-type detail.

Brand sites are cited directly: cerave.com 5 times across 3 answers, vanicream.com 4 times across 3, laroche-posay.us across 3 answers and skin1004.com across 2. Comparison and alternatives questions also produce split top picks, which leaves room for a challenger to be named.

How we did this

Sampled 2 November 2026

We asked ChatGPT and Claude 12 questions a UK shopper would ask, from “best… for…” to “cheaper alternatives to…”, with web search on. We recorded every brand each answer recommended and every website it cited: 24 answers in total. AI answers change between runs, so read this as a snapshot of what shoppers see today.
