UK · Women's activewear

If AI were picking a women's activewear brand, here's who it picks, and why.

AI recommends Lululemon more than any other brand, in 12 of 24 answers with 8 first places, because nearly every testing roundup and 'dupe' guide it reads uses Lululemon as the benchmark. Specialist and challenger brands win only when the question is narrow, such as large-bust sports bras, pickleball or 'brands like Gymshark'.

Why these brands win

What the answers and their sources have in common.

Being the brand others are compared to wins answers

Lululemon is the reference point for most of the content AI reads. CRZ Yoga is the second most recommended brand largely by being the named 'Lululemon dupe'. A challenger can borrow a leader's visibility by being clearly positioned against it.

Lululemon appears in 12 of 24 answers with 8 first places. CRZ Yoga appears in 9 with 4 first places and was both models' first pick for 'alternatives to Lululemon Align leggings', drawing on dupe.com and flexwearlab.com's 'Best Lululemon Dupes on Amazon'.

Narrow problem questions hand first place to specialists

When the shopper names a specific need, both models pass over the big names and lead with specialists. This is the clearest route to first place for a smaller brand.

Panache was first on both models for 'high-impact sports bra for a large bust' (avg position 1.0), with sportsbrareviews.com cited 4 times in that answer. Selkirk was first on both for pickleball outfits. Alphalete and AYBL led 'brands like Gymshark'.

UK brands barely register, even for UK shoppers

Most cited sources are American, so answers lean towards US labels. British brands are under-represented, which leaves room for any UK brand that gets into the right lists.

The most cited domain is walmart.com (8 citations across 4 answers). Vuori (7 answers), Athleta (6) and Quince (4) all beat Sweaty Betty, which appears in only 3 answers, all from Claude, at an average position of 10.3. Gymshark appears in 5.

Small affiliate 'tested' blogs set the squat-proof shortlist

Many minor review blogs repeat the same five brands. AI treats this repetition as consensus, so being absent from these sites keeps a brand out of the answer.

violatethedresscode.com, flexwearlab.com, catarcottega.com, shopvitality.com, sportygymoutfits.com, smartselects.blog, advancestudy.org and sportsoutdoors.org all appear alongside the same five names: Lululemon, Nike, CRZ Yoga, Gymshark and Sweaty Betty.

Claude names high-street brands far more than ChatGPT

The two models favour different brands, so a brand can be visible on one and missing on the other. Claude leans towards familiar sportswear and high-street names, while ChatGPT leans towards US-led sources.

Nike: Claude 5 answers vs ChatGPT 1. Gymshark: 4 vs 1. Fabletics and Sweaty Betty: only Claude (3 answers each). Athleta goes the other way: ChatGPT 4 vs Claude 2. For 'gym clothes under £30', ChatGPT led with Decathlon and Claude with Primark.

How a brand gets recommended here

Hype's playbook, ranked by where AI gets its answers in this niche, plus the moves we'd make first.

Play 1 · Be tested by review sites

Send leggings to the independent 'squat-proof' and 'dupe' testers for side-by-side testing against Lululemon Align. Pitch the product as a named alternative with a clear test result, such as opacity at full squat, waistband that doesn't roll, or sweat that doesn't show.

Eight small review blogs feed the squat-proof answers and all repeat the same five brands. CRZ Yoga reached 9 answers and 4 first places mainly through dupe coverage on dupe.com and flexwearlab.com.

Play 2 · Get into the roundups AI quotes

Pitch fitness and shopping editors for their 'tested' leggings, sports bra and matching-set roundups. Lead with a UK angle, since UK brands are thin in these lists.

tomsguide.com was cited in 4 answers, more than any other editorial source. shopping.yahoo.com ('according to expert testing') appeared in 3. womenshealthmag.com and goodhousekeeping.com each appeared in 2, and Vogue's workout sets list fed the answer where Quince and Rhone appeared.

Play 3 · Answer-ready pages and listings

Publish your own honest 'best matching sets', 'brands like Gymshark' and 'best leggings for hot yoga' guides that include competitors. Add a comparison page and a size finder, as Enell does, for your hero product.

11 of the 40 cited domains are brand sites. Fabletics' own blog fed the matching-sets answer where Claude ranked Fabletics first, TLF Apparel and Vitality were named after their own guides were cited, and enell.com's 'Bra Comparison' page helped Enell reach an average position of 2.0.

Play 4 · Be tested by review sites

Own one narrow problem question, such as large-bust support, a specific sport or sustainability. Get tested by the specialist site AI uses for that question rather than chasing 'best activewear brands' against Lululemon.

Specialists took first place on both models where the question was specific: Panache for large-bust sports bras, backed by 4 sportsbrareviews.com citations in one answer, and Selkirk for pickleball. For sustainability, thegoodtrade.com was cited 3 times across 2 answers that put Patagonia and Girlfriend Collective first.
